About
The Dickens Surname Project extends a warm invitation to all Dickens descendants worldwide to please join our surname study! Our primary focus is identifying the various Dickens paternal lineages through Y-DNA testing as Y-DNA is passed virtually unchanged from father to son throughout the generations. Y-DNA testing is a valuable research tool that enables us to identify patrilineal connections, even in the absence of genealogical records. Thanks to our project's Y-DNA testers, we now know that the Dickens surname has multiple independent origins. Where does your family fit in? Will your test uncover a new Dickens lineage, or will you match one of our existing groups of testers? If you are a Dickens descendant with an interest in combining DNA evidence with traditional genealogy, please test at FamilyTreeDNA and join our surname project! The requirements for joining are listed below.
Project Goals
- Assist members with understanding their DNA results
- Organize and analyze Y-DNA results
- Investigate surname origins and migration paths
- Identify common ancestors and paternal lineages
Notable Connections
Our project seeks direct male surname descendants of famed English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870) and his father John Dickens (1785-1851) for Y-DNA testing. If you are a Dickens male of either line, please email one of the project administrators for more information. All other descendants are welcome to join with autosomal DNA results.
Requirements for Joining
Dickens descendants must have Y-DNA and/or Family Finder test results at FamilyTreeDNA in order to join the surname project:
- Males with the Dickens surname (or variant) should have Y-DNA test results from FamilyTreeDNA.[1]
- Males and females with Dickens ancestry within 5 generations may join with Family Finder results.[3]
- Female descendants should ask a male relative who carries the Dickens surname to take a Y-DNA test.[4]
- To transfer autosomal DNA results from another company, please see FamilyTreeDNA’s transfer page.[5]
