Passion: Orkney Islands, especially their history.

Genealogist for over half a century. Member of Scottish Genealogy Society, Aberdeen and NE Scotland Family History Society, the Orkney Family History Society, the Dumfriesshire Family History Society, the Clan Irwin Association, GOONS and ISOGG.

Wrote and self-published in 2003 "The Orkney Poll Taxes of the 1690s", in 2004 "Trace Your Orkney Ancestors", both now out-of-print, and in 2009 "The Breckness Estate", a detailed history of the estate of which ancestors were tenants.

Co-edited with Jean Monro Sir George Mackenzie's "Families of Scotland", published by The Scottish Record Society 2008. Since 2010 editor of "The New Orkney Antiquarian Journal". Co-edited anthologies of the works of the Orcadian folklorists Ernest Marwick and George Marwick. Edited "HMS Hampshire: a Century of Myths and Mysteries Unravelled" in 2016.

Co-founded the Clan Irwin Surname DNA Study in 2005. See www.clanirwin-dna.org . Study now has over 600 members, of which over 120 have taken BigY test.

Wrote "Towards improvements in y-DNA Surname Project Administration" JOGG Fall 2010, and have given presentations on y-DNA as listed at http://www.clanirwin-dna.org/additional-analyses/9-administering-a-large-ydna-surname-project .

Joined Guild in Feb. 2012 and founded Irwin One-Name Study in Feb. 2013.

Published a CD "Some Irving Genealogies" in 2012 and published books entitled "Dr Christopher Irvin and his "Original of the Irvins"", "The Genealogy of Washington Irving" and "The Irwin Surname: its Origins, Diapora and Early Branches". All available on Amazon. "The Irvines of Orkney" will be published shortly.
