The following is a list of suggestions compiled by the genetic genealogy community of features that we would like 23andMe to develop in the short and the long term.
Contents
Autosomal DNA
- Improve the Ethnicity Estimates. Continue to improve the Ethnicity Estimates, adding more regions in areas such as North America, South America, Africa and elsewhere as feasible. Incorporate reference datasets from academic datasets such as the People of the British Isles Project, the Irish DNA Atlas Project and the Genomes of the Netherlands Project.
Privacy
- Change the informed consent process to make it much more transparent relative to what is done and can be done with the participant's information. See this blog post from Roberta Estes on 23andMe and Ancestry selling your DNA information
General
- Upgrade the 23andMe data to Build 38 or an even later version of the human reference genome. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/genome/assembly/grc/human and http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgGateway?clade=mammal&org=Human&db=hg38 Build 38.p5 is the latest version available. This isn't a high priority because it requires extensive computer time, but it should be kept on the radar screen. It would probably be necessary to co-ordinate the timing of an upgrade with AncestryDNA and Family Tree DNA in the spirit of the existing gentleman's agreement. Once the conversion has been done ensure that the input and output file converters support current older build 36 and build 37 formats for several years.
