The object of our Famous DNA pages is to provide information for educational purposes and interest. This is a rapidly advancing field and the technology for reading and interpreting ancient and forensic DNA evidence is constantly evolving. Consequently the results of earlier studies, especially those published prior to the advent of next generation sequencing, may be unreliable. Inclusion of studies on these pages does not imply endorsement from ISOGG. Please read the full text of the our disclaimer page for more information. Any linked pages listed on this page may be broken down into DNA types or groups and there may be specific pages with additional information about a specific person or group.

The following is a list of DNA Haplogroups and/or DNA results researched to belong to the Presidents of the the United States. To be listed on this page, see Listing requirements.

John Adams

United States presidents John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams belonged to Y-DNA haplogroup R1b1a2 (R-M269). Assuming paternity matches the reported genealogy which states Henry Adams b. 1583 was the Great Great Grandfather of John Adams. The genealogy of Henry Adams has three reported sons, Thomas, Joseph(John Adams and John Quincy Adams direct line), and Edward. Y-DNA has been tested from the descendants of Thomas and Edward.[1]. Full DNA results can be found in the Adams Surname Y-DNA Project hosted on Family Tree DNA.

Thomas Jefferson

Direct male-line descendants of a cousin of United States president Thomas Jefferson were DNA tested to investigate historical assertions that Jefferson fathered children with his slave Sally Hemings.[2] An extended 17-marker haplotype was published in 2007[3], and the company Family Tree DNA has also published results for other markers in its standard first 12-marker panel.[4] Combining these sources gives the consolidated 21-marker haplotype below. The Jeffersons belong to Haplogroup T (former K2).

John Quincy Adams

Please see, John Quincy Adams father's section.

Zachary Taylor

Belong to Y-DNA haplogroup R1b(R-M269)[6][7] This is assuming the actual paternity matches the reported genealogy of President Zachary Taylor.[8] The reported genealogical connection is, John Taylor (1696 VA - 1780 NC) who married Catherine Pendleton was the half-brother to Colonel James Taylor (1674-1729) who married Martha Thompson. Zachary Taylor, 12th US President of the U.S., was the great-grandson of Colonel James Taylor. DNA tested descendants of John Taylor are the basis of Zachary Taylor's assumed DNA results.[6]

Franklin Pierce

Although, President Franklin Pierce had no living male descendants,[9] he is assumed to have belonged to Y-DNA haplogroup R-M269.[9] Assuming paternity matches the genealogy, President Pierce the son of Governor Benjamin Pierce Jr.6 (Benjamin5, Stephen4, Stephen3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Thomas Pierce was born in England about 1583-84 and settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts.[9] DNA from two tested males also trace their genealogy to Thomas Pierce.[9][10] The DNA results of Group C can be found on the Pierce DNA Project's Y DNA results page under Group C.

James Buchanan

Belong to Y-DNA haplogroup R1b1.[Citation needed]

William McKinley

Belong to Y-DNA haplogroup R1b1c[Citation needed] (assuming actual paternity matches their genealogy).

Woodrow Wilson

Belong to Y-DNA haplogroup R1b1c[Citation needed] (assuming actual paternity matches their genealogy).

Listing requirements

To be listed on this page one or more of the following is observed:

  1. Published DNA results of the person or a relative in the paternal (surname) lineage.
    • Inferred paternal descent or relation is of limited evidence which could be disproved or improved by future research. The inferred descent must be easy to read and show how the conclusion was formulated.
    • Usually with Y-STRs the haplogroup is only predicted, Y-SNPs confirm the haplogroup and will take precedence.
    • Company where testing was completed with published, verifiable results.
  2. Evidence to support if one of the following conditions is met:
    • In Publications(physical or web based): Must contain evidence of achievements and discoveries in scientific publications.
    • Mass Media presence: Revealed by coverage in multiple media outlets reaching millions of people.
