ISOGG's Online Course
 Introductory Genetic Genealogy

Introduction

This course was founded in 2005 as a result of popular demand and may just as well be called "Newbie School".  "Newbie" is the term applied to anyone "new" to a given field of interest.  This term in commonly used among genealogists, and it seems, even more so among genetic genealogists.  Anyone who has just begun their trek into the exciting world of genetic genealogy is a newbie.

So what does a newbie need to know about using DNA testing for genealogy?

  • Introduction to DNA testing and technical terms.
  • How DNA testing will help your research.
  • What are your ethnic origins and how to interpret the results.
  • The different types of DNA tests available and their applications.
  • Bibliography of resources.

Overview

This course will cover these genetic genealogy basics, and with participant feedback, may be expanded.  It is designed for DNA Newbies and will be tailored to meet your needs.  Participants choose their level of learning and are encouraged to complete each lesson as they wish.

Format

The course will be divided into lessons for you to learn at your own pace. Each lesson will include definitions and links to resources for more information on the subject.  The end of each unit will include a review.

To begin: Lesson 1.1
